چکیده

We show that simple kinematic arguments can give limits on the timescale and amplitude of variabilities in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, especially when the variability timescale is shorter than the observed time since the burst ∆t < t. These limits help us to identify the sources of afterglow variability. The afterglows of GRB 011211 and GRB 021004 marginally violate these limits. If such violation is confirmed by the Swift satellite, a possible explanation is that (1) the compact objects that power GRB jets continue to eject an intermittent outflow for a very long timescale (& 1day), (2) the GRB jet from the central engine has a temporal anisotropy with a large brightness contrast & 10 and small angular structure . 10, or (3) many (& 10) regions fluctuate simultaneously in the emitting site. Long-acting Engine or Strong Temporal Anisotropy Inferred from Variabilities of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

We show that some types of variabilities of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows are forbidden by simple kinematical arguments. These limits help us to identify the source of afterglow variabilities. Actually the afterglows of GRB 011211 and GRB 021004 violate these limits, implying that the compact object that powers GRB jets may continue to eject an intermittent outflow for a very long timescale ...

A Standard Kinetic Energy Reservoir in Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

We present a comprehensive sample of X-ray observations of 41 γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, as well as jet opening angles, θj for a subset with measured jet breaks. We show that there is a significant dispersion in the X-ray fluxes, and hence isotropic X-ray luminosities (LX,iso), normalized to t = 10 hr. However, there is a strong correlation between LX,iso and the beaming fractions, fb ≡ [1 −...

A unifying view of Gamma–Ray Burst Afterglows

We selected a sample of 33 Gamma–Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by Swift, with known redshift and optical extinction at the host frame. For these, we constructed the de–absorbed and K–corrected X–ray and optical rest frame light curves. These are modelled as the sum of two components: emission from the forward shock due to the interaction of a fireball with the circum–burst medium and an additional...

Properties of Relativistic Jets in Eight Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows

We extend our calculation of physical parameters of GRB afterglows through modelling of their broadband emission to three other cases: 980519, 000926, and 010222. Together with 990123, 990510, 991208, 991216, and 000301c, there are eight afterglows whose optical and radio emission allow determination of the burst collimation. The jet energies (after the GRB phase) obtained for this sample of ei...

X-ray flares, neutrino cooled disks, and the dynamics of late accretion in GRB engines

We compute the average luminosity of X-ray flares as a function of time, for a sample of 10 long-duration gamma-ray burst afterglows. The mean luminosity, averaged over a timescale longer than the duration of the individual flares, declines as a power-law in time with index ∼ −1.5. We elaborate on the properties of the central engine that can produce such a decline. Assuming that the engine is ...
